Vienna Senators 1B tapped team Player of the Week

VIENNA , Va. July 8—In their race up the Clark Griffith League standings, the Senators have been on a hot hitting streak.

At the center of that hitting storm has been first baseman Sam Honeck.

Honeck, who will be transferring to Tulane University this fall after playing at Grayson Community College for two seasons, has been a strong presence with the Vienna Senators this summer.

The rising junior from Austin , Texas , has been a strong anchor for the Senators this season, and had a stellar week for the defending league champions.

Since July 1, the Senators have gone 4-1, and Honeck was a huge part of those victories. On July 2 against the DC Grays, Honeck hit a home run to help the Senators to victory. The left-handed hitter's best game of the week came on July 3, when he went 3-for-5 and collected two RBI. He hit his sixth home run of the season against the Blue Caps that evening.

Sam Honeck hit his seventh homer of the season against the McLean Raiders on July 6, as the Senators won 16-3. against the Raiders, he went 2-for-5 with two RBI.

The power Honeck has demonstrated this past week has been a part of his M.O. this season with the Senators.

For the season thus far, he's batted .323 and has collected 20 RBI. His glove has been as solid as his bat this season as well. In 24 games with Vienna , Honeck has made 153 put outs with 11 assists to chalk up a .988 fielding percentage.

With Grayson Community College this spring, Honeck batted .372 and hit 12 homers and collected 56 RBI. Honeck's talent in his first year with Grayson Community College got him drafted by the New York Yankees in 2006.

With three weeks left in the season, Honeck's strong hitting and fielding will help lead the Senators to an unprecedented ninth Clark Griffith League title as well as a second consecutive trip to the National Baseball Congress World Series.
