Senators outfielder gets honor for Week 7


VIENNA , Va. July 24óLooks like Xavier Qualls is up to his old tricks.

Last season's Clark Griffith League Most Valuable Player returned mid-season to the Senators to help them on their quest for an unprecedented ninth league championship and a second consecutive trip to the National Baseball Congress World Series. In 2006 with the Senators, Qualls batted .340 in 40 games with five home runs and 31 RBIs.

In his second season with the Senators, Qualls has proven to be a key athlete as well. In 11 games with the Senators, he's batted .464 and totaled nine RBI.

In games from July 13 to 19, Qualls stood out offensively. The athlete from Southern Louisiana University batted .526 to lead the league last week. Qualls hit five doubles and collected 10 hits and six RBI.

In July 13's 11-4 victory against the DC Grays, Qualls went 3-for-5 with two RBI. In the first game of a doubleheader against the Maryland Tigers on July 14, he went 4-for-4 with three RBI.

Qualls, who played with Copiah-Lincoln Community College before transferring to Southeastern Louisiana University , was a part of a 2004 State Championship team with Brookhaven High School . With Brookhaven High, Qualls was named All-County, All-District, All-Region and named to 2 nd Team All-State.

In 2006 with Copiah-Lincoln, he batted .450 with 58 hits in 44 games. Qualls hit 6 home runs and had 47 RBI that season as well. He was named a second-team Junior College All-American in 2006 as well. As a freshman with the team in 2005, Qualls was a part of the Copiah-Lincoln fourth-place finish in the JUCO World Series.

The Brookhaven, Miss. native will be a senior this fall at Southeastern Louisiana . He was a key new player for the team this spring. He hit .260 with 5 hits and 29 RBI.

With one week left in the season, Griffin 's athleticism will help lead the Senators to an unprecedented ninth Clark Griffith League title as well as a second consecutive trip to the National Baseball Congress World Series.
